Olivia and I had the Takasaki house to ourselves cause Kath and Hayashi went on a hike with some Americans. We were too tired after 2 days hiking around Tokyo and Olivia has a cold anyway - (she thinks its the Tokyo Flu, but it isnt).
Anyway we watched TV and ate some chocolate, played DVDs and board games (or bored games as I call them). We are recovering and slowly finding our place in a culture that tolerates us with welcome curiosity and dismissal.
I feel like a celebrity. The Japanese idealise western culture and beauty, but also critique it with humour and dismissal. At times Olivia and I are made to feel Other, an unpleasent, but very interesting experiance. I am beginning to understand what a Muslim or Jew may feel in a Christian country, or an African or Asian in a Western country. I am glad to have some cultural education so I can study this experiance with some depth.
