Exhibiting in Second life. An art world that we create.
Hello there,
Lately it seems that a bit of brainstorming has been happening, I pre-apologize for the excited, scattered and sometimes incoherent approach that this opening topic is going to take.

Above are some links for you people to check out Second Life if you have not yet.
I highly recommend so, as it is something else. Being only a novice myself to the world of second life, I am discovering new things each time I log on to the site.
If you do manage to get on to the site, look me up. My second life name is Ori Habercom.
OK, I have done the talk, so let’s just step away from Second life for a moment so I can explain the reasons why I have posted this forum.
I thought it would help if I reveal my views on exhibiting via a traditional method i.e. the gallery space.
I guess this is a challenge to most artists, dealing with exhibiting work in public. It would make sense for me to lay it out and open these concerns for discussion and hear some other point of views.
What are some of the pros and cons of standard galleries right now?
I love going out to an opening night of a show, it is a great chance to see your mates, have drink, chat for a few hours and see some local art talent. I enjoy exhibiting too, there is nothing quite like the rush of having your work out there, there is that feeling of vulnerability mixed with exposure that you get when you see a resolved work in a space.
Galleries are an excellent hub for communities and subcultures to thrive and meet. They are places for art people to liaise and network. They are a valuable tool in marketing the artist, shaping their career as they move along the ant pile.
The question is what happens when you don’t get a show? Where do you exhibit? Most artists will not linearly rise up the food chain, we can expect a lot of rejection in our careers as we tap dance our way into the local art scene.
I have found and observed that traditional exhibiting can be an ongoing struggle of getting your work out there for others to see. The availability of space and the restrictions that this world place on an artist can be at times disheartening. Proposals, renting and marketing costs add up to make exhibiting quite the challenge. Not to mention that only a small percentage of people may even see it.

SL ARI
I am quite excited by this idea.
A Second Life Artists Run Initiative...
Of course the first objection comes when you find out how much it costs - SL is by no means cheap... but perhaps there are ways around this little problem.
The thing that interests me beyond the administration of the project is the potential content. SL is rife with contemporary issues... corporatisation, public-private space, hyper-reality, rationality and truth, etc
Check out this link to a silicon valley columnist who is very critical of SL: Click Here
I suppose we should approach people and ask them to contribute there interest to this forum...

Meetings
Perhaps the way we tried to meet regularly for the we are the web show - we should try and meet in Second Life to talk about this project.
When would be a good time? And where should we meet?
My SL name is AlexGibson Gibb.

Yes, good idea. Lets meet in Second Life. My name is Snppls Sewell.
We should archive our meetings somehow and set regular meeting times for other people to join in on.

Also how does this sunday the 29th fair to meet up in flesh reality to lay this out further?
Any time...
I can meet any night really. Perhaps Wednesday night would be best for me... I can come this Sunday too. What time and where?

We are what we want
"In a recent lecture at Columbia University, Slavoj Zizek coined a millennial aphorism that foregrounds the equivocal status of "being" in the information age: "We are what we want, in cyberspace." This provocation, which recasts ontological status as an effect of virtual desire, suggests why some bimillennials are still reading Freud, to discover if our "postsociety" has succeeded in substituting interface for face–to–face." from "Is Oedipus On–line?"
