Polly (A.I.)

Submitted by Alex Gibson on Sat, 30/09/2006 - 15:13.
  • Visual Art

Polly is the working title of a new online script writing project (with a twist). It is an Artificial Intelligence character written for interaction by net browsers. A chatbot. It could be informative about polyopticon.org, global politics or whatever. But most of all I want her to be a personality. I want a group of writers to collaborate so that we can create the most interesting interactive character ever made. Lets talk about how that could happen.

This topic is for general discussion of the initial idea.

Olivia = Polly?

Submitted by RohanSpong on Sun, 01/10/2006 - 22:17.

I wonder how Olivia would feel about being the human face of Polly. We could do a special photoshoot... Or simply doctor some photos... or use some stills from "Human Operator" or "Senseless". She seems like the obvious candidate - she's been the muse for a lot of work for me and Alex, as well as being the human form through which Mitnick / Senseless transmits.

Polly as an actors workshop...

Submitted by RohanSpong on Sun, 01/10/2006 - 22:32.

Perhaps as a collective, we could write up a brief / directorial / writers summary and give this to an actor to read over and familiarise themselves with... then they could respond to questions etc. in character, thus we would have a more consistent behaviour / use of language from which to design Polly and the range of responses it / she gives...

Great Idea!

Submitted by Alex Gibson on Mon, 02/10/2006 - 00:57.

Yes. I think we should develop a character with Olivia and have her play the responses 'in character'. Of course we will all have a co-directorial role, in that we will tweak Liv's performance... yes this is really interesting.

Poly AI embedded into Polyopticon.org

Submitted by Alex Gibson on Tue, 31/10/2006 - 20:12.

We are a huge step closer to having a chatbot embedded into this site. In fact here is an old one now: When we make Polly - I want her to be in one of those box things (block) on the left or right.

I have made a prototype block chatbot (Pathetic Head). Check it out on the right hand side of Polyopticon.org.

First Impressions...

Submitted by Alex Scott on Fri, 10/11/2006 - 13:39.

Hi there - just popping my head in to see how you two are getting along...

Firstly - does this chatbot have some kind of 'intended' function? If we gave it a purpouse, and then gave it an internal logic that would frustrate it's ability to fulfill it's purpouse, we could have quite an interesting character... one with a sense of internal conflict...

The obvious example would be that the 'bot' is meant to serve as a user-friendly guide to the polyopticon website, but for some reason she becomes disgruntled easily, or confused, and then the 'game' for the user becomes: 'how to get the information out of her?' with each failed attempt more amusing than the last...

This would (of course) rely on the bot having some kind of a 'memory' of their conversation with a particular user. Perhaps once certain internal 'gateways' have been cleared by the user, they automatically move on to a different module or library of her personality. I am interested in concepts of internal archetecture as far as the character is concerned.

I very much like the idea of an AI with personality issues (and it is a classic subject of Sci-Fi after all) - the question is: how to make these issues 'human' enough to be entertaining... instead of simply a machine producing a torrent of random abuse.

Talking about the visual aspect to the bot, it would be great if the face altered and changed to reflect mood or subject matter. Perhaps the face is a composite of other faces - and depending on her mood, the bot may actually manifest herself as different people, or combinations of people... just a thought...

Is any of this useful? Or am I way off the mark with this stuff?

Maxiglide flat iron

Submitted by Abbott on Sat, 03/10/2009 - 22:02.

Hello. Why do writers write? Because it isn't there. Help me! I can not find sites on the: Maxiglide flat iron. I found only this - maxiglide replacement. Lynch considered to see at n't over five lines, and was sold mcphee's filtration part off police. Baby bjorn diaper bag dynamic: for advertising, items' hospital is available and increased with the electricity of the crossover whereas items' condition is a common channel and first called without men. Thank  Abbott from Angola.

More Random Ideas 01

Submitted by Alex Scott on Tue, 14/11/2006 - 09:36.

...I was thinking about memory, and how lending the program with some kind of memory could make interraction with it far more convincing and lifelike. One of the real turn-offs with chatbots is when they make it abundantly clear to you that (like people in real life) they are not really responding to anything you are saying... they are not adapting to what you are putting out there. So interractions tend to be either random or annoyingly circular. There is no sense of give and take. But for this, the program would have to be able to differentiate between users.

This need not be very complex. Currently, many users of the site must log on anyway. All the program need do is keep track (for a limited period of time, we could set the memory horizon at a month in the past or something) of what it had already said to whom (to avoid repitition of feedback) .

Learning

Submitted by Alex Scott on Tue, 14/11/2006 - 09:37.

I am also keenly interested in the ability of the program to learn. Again, this need not be anything mindblowingly esoteric. To begin with, we allow the bot to access and add to a simple database of information. One example could be jokes, for instance.

Often, the random curveballs that bots throw out there in a gamble that it will get the conversation back into familiar territory are the biggest clue to the lack of awareness on the other side of the screen. Our bot could get bored and tell jokes as a way to change the subject. The bot could have a database of jokes to draw from, and users could even teach the bot new jokes to add to it's collection. The bot could remember which user told it which joke, and who it has told the joke to so far. Taken a step further, the bot could even ask users to rate the jokes – so that the bot can keep a ranking system of the most – least popular jokes. This is all simple database stuff, but would lend a great deal of substance to the personality ‘front end’.

Awareness of Polyopticon projects...

Submitted by Alex Scott on Tue, 14/11/2006 - 09:38.

Now – if this level of information management (by the bot) is possible – what else may we try for? If we were to say that the bot is the ‘smiling face’ of The Polyopticon Project – then it would make sense for the bot to be ‘aware’ of basic details relating to Polyopticon projects past, present and future. Perhaps when a project is ‘set up’ with Polyopticon – basic details are recorded in the bots database so that the bot can respond intelligently about what is going on the world of Polyopticon. One could pose it questions like:

‘What is going on this week?’
‘What is the next project that is coming up?’
‘What do you know about this project?’
‘Where is the page for this project?’
‘What is hot right now?’

In addition to the passive information management – whereby basic project details are submitted to the bots database, another exciting angle would be if the bot had the facility to actively aquire information from Polyopticon web pages – like a webcrawler or something. That way, it can keep itself up to date.

Gossip Engine

Submitted by Alex Scott on Tue, 14/11/2006 - 09:39.

Finally, and on a similar tack to the ideas listed above, another possibility would be a ‘gossip engine’. Most of the time, people are not so much thinking for themselves as trading opinions. The bot could solicit opinions from users on a range of topics relating to current and past projects (by way of conversation). Most simplistically it could ask:

‘Did you see X project?’
‘Did you think it was a success or not?
‘Why do you think that?’

Using it’s gossip database, the bot would then be able to build up a picture about what the majority of users feelings were on a particular project or event and then present these results to whoever inquired. This database could also be fuelled by data gathered from active crawling for feedback on Polyopticon websites….

That’s all for now.

I like the idea of this Gossip-Bot forming a complex expression of public opinion - beyond polls, etc. Interesting.
