Telepathy

Telepathy Lecture Transcript:

Um, we’re Sean and Veronica and we are in a telepathic relationship.
Most nights we set aside an hour for telepathic practice. During the first
20 minutes Veronica sends and I receive we then swap roles and when the
session is over we email each other a report of the experience.

We are in somewhat of an altered state after the telepathy and the texts
read as a sort of stream of consciousness as well as an attempt to sift
through all the crap in our heads in an attempt to locate the telepathic
exchange. The texts end up sounding a lot like the way people speak when
they recount a dream, a strange situation of absolute certainty applied to
a completely imaginary proposition. Here is a sample text that Sean emailed
me after an early telepathic session.

I turned off all the lights and lay down on my back with my hands by my
side. I focused my consciousness on firstly a single white rose with a
leaf. I was imagining sending this rose to Veronica slowly through space.
On the rose was a single ant that walked up from the stem onto the white
petals. I then added a rainbow flavored lollipop beside the rose and
imagined sending this too. It was about the 10-minute mark that I started
to experience a hot sensation in my face and the back of me head. I
couldn’t say if it was physical or mental. I kept on imagining what a
rose looked like and how this one appeared to me. What it felt like. What
it was like to smell. How Veronica would hold it. Around this time I added
one more object into what I was imagining. This time it was the word
"chain". Again i spelled out the word chain and imagined what its physical
properties were. I found it difficult to decide whether I should be
imagining sending Veronica these signals or whether she would come to me.
Maybe the warm face sensations were Veronica coming to me. This was
Veronica’s response:

I lay down on my bed with the lights off and my eyes closed and
concentrated on trying to look out, through my minds eye. The space I
'saw' was dark and yet full of movement and a glittery sort of softness. I
felt that an image from you was just below or to the side of me, like
moving through a winding tunnel with the light somewhere ahead of me. I
had a sense of a bronze locket or a belt buckle with a rope or chain
passing through it. Also tweezers or drum sticks. However, the overriding
and lasting impression of you sending to me was an image of your face and
you calling my name. At first I thought that this was just me thinking
about you but I wonder if instead this is the telepathic exchange and I
almost missed it in its simplicity.

For us these texts articulate well all the wonder and romance and wishful
possibilities that Veronica and I are beginning to engage with. Our study
of scientific and esoteric texts to do with telepathy have all proposed
that a telepathic relationship works best between people who care deeply
about one another. With this in mind we began to harness whatever feelings
existed between us and begin the construction of a truly caring
relationship.

The principle space for the growing of our relationship is the Internet
and hence it is a relationship that is firmly rooted in language. But our
study of psychoanalytic texts teaches us that language makes us all
neurotic because of all the double meanings and its lack of any real
relationship with what it signifies. Moreover we are aware of the way the
unconscious uses metaphor and metonymy to slip repressed desires through
these fault lines in language. With this in mind we are constantly
examining our texts for slips of the pen that might indicate unconscious
desires for each other.

To stay with the language theme, I was inspired to write some poems for
Veronica that I posted on my blog.

I was so touched by this that I asked Sean to commit and declare this
affection more publicity by writing it on the wall of our shared work
space for all to see. Which he did. Sean will now read you his poem:

Desperate Control
Clutching onto her alone

The Sean and Veronica group becomes increasingly digitized. Through the experience of analysis I have come to realise the ways in which we have created an external situation to enact and elaborate our internal view of ourselves in relation to others. I think its becoming apparent and possible for both of us to see our part in the constant re-creation of distressing life events, and to engage more actively in different , more constructive ways of relating. ie: it could be described as reality-testing the internal world and modifying it in the light of new information. Our enquiry is a non-moralistic, non-judgemental attitude that over time and with interpretation becomes internalised within both of us. I have now internalised a more supportive, understanding and encouraging consciousness to guide my behaviour. This combined consciousness took a dynamic rather than static view of the mind, seeing movement, energy, and in particular conflict, as intrinsic to mental life and insight

Our Telepathic Sessions Begin

At 9pm on 11/10/2006 both Veronica and myself attempted Telepathy and then posted our results over Myspace. This is something we have been doing on and off for a while now but should hopefully become a little more frequent. I'm also going to make posts on every Telepathic session we participate in and post the results in my Blog which can be found here: http://www.snppls.blogspot.com/. The structure of the Telepathic sessions is first broken up into a 15 minute block where I send to Veronica. We then take a 5 minute break to write down our experiences. We then swap roles as Veronica sends to me for the next 15 minutes until it becomes time for us to post our results on the Internet. This is what I sent to Veronica:

"I gave myself a few moments before 9 to relax and clear my mind. My window was open and a nice, cool breeze was coming into my room as I lay down on the ground. My mind felt open and clear. I started trying to send the feeling of traveling in a car but I quickly moved on to lying down on the sand at the beach at night time. I tried using the sound of the wind rustling through the trees outside my room as the ocean waves moving up towards the beach. I imagined the feeling of looking up at the stars lying beside the beach and the overwhelming calm I felt. I then imagines the feeling of falling asleep in the car while the soft rumbles and rattles of the car would make me even sleepier, Again I went back to the beach watching the stars and the timeless, relaxing quality all of my feelings seemed to bring. I also said Veronica Kent throughout the session placing an emphasis on the word "Kent"."

She then replied with this:

"Initially it was that photo of FIFI we put in the show and hanging the show on Tuesday. FIFI was very tatty around the edges. Aeroplanes and airports also featured throughout along with flat seascapes and white loops."

When it came Veronica's turn to send she sent me this:

"I sent you my back yard on a sunny day. The curved red brick wall and the lattice with jasmine growing on it. All the herbs and the new orange nasturtiums. Sunny was climbing the fence. I was sitting on a green chair reading a book. At one point you were in the garden too. There was also digging in soil and buried things. Thoughts about computers kept creeping into my head"

And I received this:

"Again I lay down and relaxed my body. Very quickly I received thoughts and visions of fast movements. These movements seemed to remind me of close ups in films of someones arm moving or a leg running. The movements seemed to be bodily almost as if it were a dance. The movements gave me a sense that lots of things were happening and changing. I then got some quick images of eyes and a tall pole and others I cant remember. Later in the session I felt a sadness and a feeling of crying like Veronica was telling me a sad story. The session at this point felt like a narrative and that perhaps the first part was connected to this. The next feeling I experienced was a feeling of disgust and some images of people pointing to things down low."

The connections were some what sparse to what we are used to but our conclusions were to create a link with seascapes and travelling. Veronica also said "I was thinking sad thoughts in relation to my daughter Sunny during my send as she was sad today in the back yard."

climbing stairs,
I tried to remember all the staircases I have spent extended lengths of time climbing up in my life, the stairs to our studio, the stairs to my bedroom when I was a teenager, the stairs to my apartment in Amsterdam, the stairs at my high school, stairs to temples and stairs in theatres,back stairs where I had cigarette breaks at work in bars etc. etc. generally I was climbing up these staircases. often there were pictures/notices attached to the walls of the the stair wells. it was tiring climbing stairs for 15 minutes, I was surprised at how many staircases there were in my life.

A light, glowing animal like creature on all fours with long hair. I couldn't see its face. It was unpleasant and wild, it felt close to my neck and it was sort of throwing its head around.

I started my session with a more comfortable setup than what I am used to. I set out a pillow and a blanket so that I would be more comfortable than in previous sessions. I also started a few minutes earlier to our arranged starting time so that I could telepathically receive freely without forcing myself to act upon certain thoughts. The first image that popped into my head was an arid landscape but I quickly abandoned this. I then got an image of a blinking eye. After a minutes or so I then received an image of a young girl wearing a dress kneeling down. She later pointed to her foot like it was trying to tell me something. Her knees also seemed to be of some importance but she seemed to be leading me astray or tricking me. I couldn't be sure what her significance was. I then got more images of eyes. Especially big green eyes and then the initials S.B. The eyes eventually moved onto images of masks. Bird masks, dog masks and snake masks were all featured. The bird mask was gold and strong. Also the name "Deven" was mentioned.

What I sent:

I started sending the colour blue. I tried imagining it in its purest form possible and sending you this thought as if you were in the same room as me. I continued doing this for the first five minutes of my session as best I could. I then sent a brief message of a sad girl. I then moved my arms about in real life and eventually stood up and starting dancing in silence. At this time I was remembering our discussion about receiving telepathic messages from a person who is physical active. My room was dark and I could hear my clothes moving about but I was repeating your name over and over in my head as I did it. I kept your name in the back of my head as I moved about my room.

The theme that Sean and I sent out telepathically was " WOOD "
here is a work that we made in response to it. We used Feng Shui principles to make it. These suggest that WOOD can be represented by:

Geoff Lowe and Jackie Riva opened our show in Melbourne telepathically from Turkey. At 5.30pm on the opening night we all gathered around their photos and silently tried to receive/be open to their opening speech. Here is a picture of us waving to their photos after the telepathic session ended.

They also provided a written statement which appeared at the opening and in the catalogue

"At a time in the world when its too hard to understand just about everything, it would be pleasurable to be able to transmit something, we'd like to transmit something like a work from A Constructed World. Then I wonder when you transmit something is it pure feeling, pure message, unmediated, or is it a text that's transmitted? the painting department asked Sean and I to be the models for this weeks life drawing class. We did several poses that mimic the way we are when we try and do telepathy together in our seperate houses. In these poses we sent messges to each other and also sent jointly to the people drawing us. To finish we tried to get the class to tune into the telepathic exhibition that Robert Barry sent out in 1969.
Im not quite sure what they (the faculty) expected but i have a feeling that they really felt we would be able to instantly comnmunicate telepathically with the people dtrawing us.
what people seemed to get instead was a relationship and a narrative potential that they hadnt experienced before in life drawing classes.
We tried to send the messages of sexy robots/robots with exagerated sexual features.
but what we got was lots of nice charcoal drawings of us lying down together.
It was a nice calm time together as a group .
i think we need to charge more for our services.
interesting how literally some people take our project.
