Loxion Kulta: Artists

  • Loxion Kulta: E’kasi in a Time of Democracy

While artists such as Zulu produce massive canvases employing a tool of destruction as his main medium, it’s also interesting to see Leah Angels a photojournalist and documentary photographer become part of her work in process by constantly visiting her subject at home and spending quality time with the family in a build up towards her body of work.

Born in Kwa Zulu Natal, Sandile Zulu studied at the historic Rourke’s Drift among other institutions. His work is informed by the daily essentials such as water, plants and fire to name but a few. He creates a chaotic order in an immaculate way. His work speaks to the viewer on different levels through his historical references which are depicted as a continuous struggle, as well as the ability to appreciate the presented culture/life style - therefore finding one’s rest in a place without space.

In the same breathe, collaboration between traditional dancer such as Funeka Ramorula and Spoken word group, Uhuru Consciousness becomes a high-light in the society that has begun to marvel from its rebirth. At 25, Ramorula is a product of Moving Into Dance (MID) Mophatong in Newtown Johannesburg. He has shared the hottest stage with African giants in traditional dance while representing a country that has an immense western influence in its society. It is remarkable to see the ability to take pride and value in a culture that is slowly fading in the western one. Not only does Ramorula perform the township influenced pieces, he demonstrates an understanding of his heritage physically and spiritually when it comes to the African dance. When paired with Uhuru Consciousness the couple harnesses the tradition and mainstream culture in a way that defines some important aspects of Loxion Kulta.

Uhuru Consciousness is a four piece suit spoken/sung word comprising three guys and a girl. They juxtaposition and defy the stereotypical efforts of stage presentation. They speak their mind and sing from the heart, you will be transported to another space where if your words are not an improvement on silence…you better keep it locked. They encourage audience participation and produce random results at the end of each show.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.
