The core concept of 'Senseless' which I have been developing, and from which the writers work will develop, is located in 'What is Senseless?'. I will be posting a draft of a script from the p.o.v. of Mitnick soon.

Mitnick's father is part of the Governmental Board of the TNA. Since birth Mitnick’s future has been secured for her, she will be given a role working for the TNA. Her education has involved intensive training for this role. At the age of 18, after graduating from high school, she is set to work as a Network Security Consultant for the TNA. Her job involves monitoring and preventing hackers from gaining access to the TNA system. As well as this she must trace and collect data on the hackers which will lead to their persecution. After a brief period working in the department Mitnick's curiosity gets the better of her and she starts to ‘crack’. This involves cracking into the TNA system to steal information such as Top Level passwords to give to the hackers. This is when she is caught out, captured and the story goes from there…

Trade Nations of America: TNA – Formed in 2017, the Trade Nations of America consists of the United States of America, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and South America. The TNA is a hegemonic democracy, which has been held in a continual ‘state of emergency’ since 2021. The TNA, governed by the Governmental Board, consists of Eight Executive Members, which oversee the Five Panoptic States. The TNA protects the people by upholding strong economic and cultural relationships, allowing for global trade and security. The TNA is a computer-assisted government which distributes information to, oversees and aids it’s people through surveillance, machines and the media.

Hegemonic Democracy – The TNA is a hegemonic democracy. It is defined by a Constitution, which excludes a Bill of Rights. A Governmental Board of Eight Executive Members and Five Panoptic States governs the TNA. The Board is run in a corporate fashion, democratic in that the people can elect members, however, the Eight Executive Members at the time select the candidates for Government. In the case of the Five Panoptic States, an Artificial Intelligence selects the ruling member, which has been elected by the people.

The Eight Executive Members of the TNA – the Eight Executive Members of the TNA include a lawyer, a priest from The Evangelical Church of America, an IT specialist, an Army General, a psychiatrist, the ex-president of the United States of America, a financial advisor and an Artificial Intelligence. The Executive Members have the power to declare and cease War, a ‘state of emergency’, to alter the laws and to give overriding orders to the Five Panoptic States.

The Five Panoptic States – The Five Panoptic States sit on the Board of the TNA yet remain subservient to the demands of the Eight Executive Members of the Board. The Five Panoptic States are each governed by a human and a machine ruler. The human ruler is selected from a database, submitted by the people, by the machine ruler. The role of the Five Panoptic States in the functioning of the TNA is to ensure the effective and efficient running of trade relations, boarder security, capital growth and civil peace. They are also required to uphold the laws of the TNA and act as a police state.

State of Emergency - A governmental declaration by the TNA that has suspended normal functions of government and democracy. The declaration of the state of emergency was set in place in 2021, during the formation of the United Nations of Europe. The state of emergency worked to alert and protect citizens during a time of war, declared by the TNA on the UNE. The cold war between the UNE and the TNA has not as yet resulted in armed combat, and has lasted for eight consecutive years. The enforcement of the state of emergency requires citizens to alter their normal behaviours and adjust these in accordance with new laws of the TNA. It has also been used as a rationale for suspending civil liberties.

The Laws of the TNA – Since the declaration of the state of emergency a series of new laws were introduced by the TNA. The overriding purpose of these laws is public safety and security. The Public Safety Law restricts citizens from engaging in a variety of public acts, allowing for the prevention of mass crowding in areas other than the workplace. Socialising is to be contained to the Internet and other interactive, monitored communication systems. The Public Decency Laws consist of the removal of rights to stand in public places, drink or eat in public places, carry undistinguishable objects, to make public presentations and ensures that one must disclose all requested information to members of the TNA Police upon request or face punishment. Sedition Laws relating to engagement in seditious acts can be interpreted very loosely by law enforcement and justice systems. As well as this, all citizens are issued with and must carry a ‘Start-card’, a multi-function card which can be used on public transport, for purchases, loans and communication and allows the TNA to keep track of its people at all times. The ‘Start-card’ is controlled by a pin code and it is a criminal offence to disclose this pin to anyone. Copyright laws do not permit citizens to share knowledge or information. All education and research is subject to the General Public Copyright Act of 2017. This means that all knowledge and intellectual property is owned and licensed by the TNA. Failure to comply with these Laws will result in punishment.

The United Nations of Europe: UNE – The United Nations of Europe were formed in 2021, as a reaction against the TNA. The UNE consists of Europe (excluding Switzerland), Africa, Russia, the United Kingdom and Canada. The UNE is a Liberal Democracy with one overriding religion, The Interfaith Church of Europe. It is less strict in its enforcement of its laws and it does have a Bill of Rights. Unfortunately it does resemble the TNA in almost every other way.

Switzerland – Switzerland continues to uphold it’s long tradition of political and military neutrality. This stance makes Switzerland a host country for hackers, artists and others wishing to escape the rule of the TNA and the UNE.

Mitnick – for the past several months Mitnick has worked for the TNA as a Network Security Consultant. She has been in line for this role since birth, as her farther was, at the time, the legal constituent of the Board of the TNA. Her role in the TNA involves monitoring and preventing hackers from gaining access to the TNA system. She must also trace and collect data on the hackers which will lead to their persecution. As well as this, she is permitted by the TNA to gain access to (crack) the UNE system to steal vital information. A few months into the job, Mitnick realises that she can earn some money on the side by selling Top Level codes to the highest bidders. She is caught and is subject to the new censorship laws, originally passed by her father. As a result, she becomes part of ‘The Censored’. Her father approves this action. Whilst existing as a disembodied consciousness, Mitnick begins to dream of becoming a hacker. During one of these dreams, she finds herself able to remotely access her discarded body. This is when she creates ‘Senseless’.

Crackers and Hackers - The notion of a cracker is defined loosely a person who uses their knowledge of computers and other technical systems for malicious or intrusive purposes. In Mitnick’s case, this involves cracking into the UNE and TNA systems to steal information such as Top Level passwords to give to the hackers. The hackers have become to be thought of as a liberating group of technical experts seeking to undermine the technological control of the people. The TNA and the UNE have tried to cast dispersions on hackers by associating them with more malicious technical experts known as crackers. These people are more interested in causing violence through sabotage, stealing information for profit and working for the military to crack enemy systems.

Senseless – a computer program which digitally records the thoughts, feelings, dreams and memories of ‘The Censored’. ‘Senseless’ was created by Mitnick through a form of phantom agency, she was able to remotely access and communicate with her own body whilst existing as one of the Censored. The program ‘Senseless’ is stored inside Mitnick’s body – an ‘Optibot’. This optibot will deliver the messages stored inside ‘Senseless’ at an underground events night held by ‘the Resistance’.

The Resistance – The resistance are a group of freedom fighters that have been disallowed entry into Switzerland and are attempting to bring down the system from the inside.

The Censored – The Censored are those who have violated the new laws of the TNA, have been captured and are submitted to a governmental process of censorship. This process involves the removal of the brain from the body. The brain is then placed on a life support system and used for research into ‘criminal consciousnesses’ by a group of scientists working for the TNA. The Censored and this process of censorship are unknown to the mass public. The Censored, once captured, are filled as ‘missing persons’.

Optibot – Optibot's are the bodies of the Censored. These bodies are re-activated and controlled by artificial intelligence brains. The Obtibots are displaced within the Five Panoptic States and infiltrated into the UNE. They act as a form of surveillance, and in the case of the TNA, also work as cheap labour in factories, ensuring peace within the workplace.

Phantom Agency – a form of remote agency one can experience whilst inside the Censored. The phantom agency allows the Censored to remotely access their bodies, in some cases gaining access to the utilisation of the senses. This phantom agency has also been known to extend into the realm of information, wherein the Censored have privileged knowledge and access information about events in the outside world. This phenomenon is known as, ‘phantom agency’.

I guess you could say I had a normal upbringing, considering. At the age of nine, when the Trade Nations of America was formed, my father was appointed the Justice Figure of the Eight Executive Members of the Board. From that moment on, I was required by Law to engage in the privilege of training and working for the TNA. My schooling, as I knew it, was drastically altered - fast tracked, resulting in a stay home Higher Education specific to my future role as a network security consultant for the TNA. Basically, an Artificial Intelligence Program taught me everything I needed to know. As a result, my human interactions and life experience were predominantly gained from the schoolyard up until the age of nine, from the death of my mother when I was 11 and at the dinner table with my father. The most part of this, the result of the Public Safety Law passed by father, during the early years of presumed threat of attack by the United Nations of Europe, which placed the entire TNA in an eternal state of emergency. Since 2021, I had left the house all of 17 times. On my 18th birthday, when I began work for the TNA, I had left the house 573 times. I shall never return.
I remember when I was child, looking at my father across the dinner table. He would tap at his peas, move them around like he was trying to hide them, then systematically squash them, but he never ate them. I hated scrubbing the green mush that was left on his plate. I hated his itchy green uniform. It made my face hurt and scrunch every time I had to hug him. I had always hated my father but I didn’t learn this until I started work for the TNA.
When I started there last year, it all began to unfold. I discovered things I never thought possible under a democracy. The more I learnt about the TNA, the more I started to resent them, to resent my father, and resent my life. I was against everything and for no one. I began cracking into the TNA system and didn’t care if I was caught. I would steal Top Level passwords and sell them to the highest bidders, any top security data or restricted files really. In my mind, I worked only for myself, stealing and selling information. Until I came across ‘The Censored’. After this, I worked as hard as I could to become one, to escape.
‘The Censored’ are a random group of dissidents captured, tortured and brutalized by the TNA for petty crimes which the government relate back to fear and control. Their past lives are taken from them, their new world a fantastic prison. The Censored are but brains, the brains of the dissidents and the brains of hope lost. They float, amidst nothingness, a mere excuse for research, for population control, hanging on via a thin line of science.
Their bodies, depending on the condition, are implanted with artificial intelligences. They roam the cities surveying the Five Panoptic States and occasionally work as cheap labor. These bodies, Optibots, are displaced somewhere where that the person is unknown, unrecognizable and uncared for. As one of the Censored, I do not and should not have contact with my body. Yet knowing it was not gone from this life, I spent my time in here chasing it, searching for it in my dreams.
It was about two months ago when I began having remote visions of my body, during my dreams. I could, it seemed see through my eyes once again, hear the sounds around me, feel the metal objects my own hands were systematically sorting. Some call it phantom agency, but it became more than that. I began to control these dreams more and more as time passed. I was able to control the body through thought, and finally movement. I wanted to explore the grounds of the factory, to look outside and see where, in which country, my body was displaced. The factory contained countless women of a range of descents, some Asian, white and many black. With only time to think, I used this time to think only of speaking to whatever if was that existed inside my body. I would tell it stories of freedom, of life when I was younger, before the TNA and the more I did this, the more it succumbed to my control. I could see where I was now, and I wanted once again to escape. Where I was then is no longer important, I am everywhere, and nowhere now.
This is why you are listening to me tonight. I could talk for hours about what has happened to me, but I won’t. There are others inside here who need to get out, need to be redeemed. I have created a program, which is stored inside this Obtibot. The program is called ‘Senseless’. It contains the stories, dreams, thoughts and feelings of the ‘Censored’. It once again gives them life, hope and agency.
Some of you have been given chips containing these stories. Tonight, I invite you to bring them to life.

Who is the audience? In terms of the fictional world of Senseless. I think it's important to know who they are as they are addressed directly. The way they are presented, they are outside of Senseless. Are we speaking to the past? Are we speaking to...I don't know...people outside of the TNA? In the European bloc or beyond? To a digital ether? To posterity?

You began the piece with a beautiful digital sense to the language. Then it became straight description. It would be nice if all the senteces were shortened. Little information bites/blips. Like fingers across the keyboard. A little bit of personality pushing through, but mostly just data. Bit of rhythm..
