Important Quotes/Concepts:

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY:
Howard Rheingold defines a 'virtual community' as such, 'the social aggregations that emerge from the Internet when enough people carry out those public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling, to form webs of personal relationships in cyberspace.'

HYPERTEXT:
Hypertext is a non-linear way of presenting information on computers. Instead of the reader being forced to read a text in the sequential order that the author wrote it, readers of hypertext can follow their own direction through the text, choosing which segments of information they read and in which order. In this way, readers of hypertext are better able to create their own meaning from the presented material.

ROBOTICS:

In 1942 Isaac Asimov proposed three 'Laws of Robotics', also later adding a prefacing 'zeroth' law:

0 - A robot may not injure humanity or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

1 - A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm, unless this would violate a higher order law.

2 - A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with a higher order law.

3 - A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with a higher order law.

A Great Book for Download

Submitted by Alex Gibson on Sat, 29/04/2006 - 12:48.

This is a great book about creativity in the Information Age. Windows users right click the link below (or Mac users hold down 'control' and click) and select 'Save Link Target as...' in order to save the book onto your hard drive. I am not sure how long this link will stay unbroken, so get it while you can... The Hackers Ethic

Empire

Submitted by Alex Gibson on Fri, 12/05/2006 - 00:20.

Olivia suggested this for the reading list:

Hardt, Micheal and Negri, Antonio "Empire", Harvard University Press, USA 2001.

Its uncanny how the ideas in this book relate to Senseless.
