glossary and other stuff

Submitted by rochelle whyte on Thu, 04/05/2006 - 12:59.

Looking good so far, I think it is appropriate to keep the possibilities of the world fairly open, especially as it would seem to me that Olivia's intention is that the writing reflect/ recall the memories of these displaced/ disembodied voices.
That being said, I have a couple of questions to put out there to get the ball rolling.
Mitnick is a "cracker"? This maybe needs some exploration - Olivia has told me that it's like a hacker only a cooler name and without (hopefully) the connotations of the dopesmoking bored geek come potential ciber bandit association, however my interrogation is in determining where she actually sits within this "hegemonic dictatorship" (which you could acutally call a "hegemonic decmocracy" and have the same world...maybe that's a more expanded debate for another time however...
I have suggested to Olivia, and want the forum to discuss, my feeling that it's important that in order to position herself as a rebel to the system, we a) have to more clearly define the system and B) her place in that. In relation to this last point, I had the thought that it would be interesting if her job or role within the society is as a "cracker" (placing her in that interesting grey area where the job she does is usually for the system so that she is dangerous to the system if she starts to subvert it - ie needed and feared). I spose kind of like a spy or intelligence officer or IT expert in our currently less-imaginative real world.
I definately think a glossary is a good idea, not just to agree on vocab and names of things in this world, but also as an opportunity to explore the entimology of words, their evolution and change of use in language and society and to make up new words, and/or new definitions.
To start the ball rolling I offer you the SHorter oxford English Disctionary definition of hegemony and associated terms:
hegemon: a leading or paramount power; a dominant state or person.
hegemonic: (adjective) ruling, supreme, dominant (noun) the supreme part, the master principle (also hegemonical)
hegemony: 1. leadership or predominance, esp by one member of a confederacy or union (origin of the states of ancient Greece) 2. Dominance or undue influence exercised by a country over its weaker neighbours
hegemonist: an advocate of a particular form of hegemony
dictator: 1. Roman history - a chief magistrate with absolute power who was appointed in an emergency
2.An absolute ruler usually temporary or irregular, esp one who succeeds a democratic government.
Hope this all helps, and look forward to reading first drafts!
